چکیده

Web caches are generally considered a useful tool because they reduce replication of network traffic flowing from original content sources. In this paper we experimentally characterise the network and transport layer consequences of web caching in the consumer ISP context. We instrumented a small number of Australian, broadband-attached homes to collect round-trip time (RTT) and hop count statistics for their HTTP/TCP sessions, and collect DNS lookup statistics associated with each HTTP exchange. We estimated the impact of DNS lookup delays on overall HTTP session times, and use our RTT and hop count statistics to show that consumer ISPs would benefit greatly from local caching, particularly in Australia where speed of light delays have a large impact on sessions times when retrieving international content. Measuring and Mitigating Web Performance Bottlenecks in Broadband Access Networks

We measure Web performance bottlenecks in home broadband access networks and evaluate ways to mitigate these bottlenecks with caching within home networks. We first measure Web performance bottlenecks to nine popular Web sites from more than 5,000 broadband access networks and demonstrate that when the downstream throughput of the access link exceeds about 16 Mbits/s, latency is the main bottle...

Prefetching the Means for Document Transfer: A New Approach for Reducing Web Latency

User-perceived latency is recognized as the central performance problem in the Web. We systematically measure factors contributing to this latency, across several locations. Our study reveals that DNS query times, TCP connection establishment, and start-of-session delays at HTTP servers, more so than transmission time, are major causes of long waits. Wait due to these factors also afflicts high...

Rapid Reverse DNS Lookups for Web Servers

When a web server wants to learn the domain name of one of its clients, it must perform a lookup in the Domain Name System’s “reverse domain”, inaddr.arpa. These lookups can take time and may have an adverse impact on the web server’s response to its clients. Rapid DNS is an intermediate client/server system that operates between a web server and a DNS server. It provides caching of the results...

Proactive Caching of DNS Records: Addressing a Performance Bottleneck

The resolution of a host name to an IP-address is a necessary predecessor to connection establishment and HTTP exchanges. Nonetheless, DNS resolutions often involve multiple remote name-servers and prolong Web response times. To alleviate this problem name servers and Web browsers cache query results. Name-servers currently incorporate passive cache management where records are brought into the...

Reducing Web Latency Using Reference Point Caching

To reduce web access latencies, we propose a new paradigm for caching at the reference point of a document. If a document is referred to from a document , information is cached at to reduce the latency of client accesses to . We focus on two specific instances of this paradigm: caching IP addresses to avoid DNS lookups at clients, and caching information about documents to avoid setting up new ...
